Kemuel Roig, the project, and the trio
3Discovery is a bold contemporary statement led by pianist, composer and maestro Kemuel Roig, where Afro-Cuban tradition meets modern jazz through original compositions, fearless improvisation and electrifying ensemble interaction. Rather than approaching tradition through nostalgia, Roig re-imagines Cuban rhythmic and melodic forms with a fresh, contemporary voice.
Driven primarily by Roig’s original music, the album unfolds as a vibrant conversation between Afro-Cuban rhythm and the harmonic sophistication of jazz and bebop. Son, rumba, mambo, cha-cha-cha, danzón and folkloric pulse are interwoven with advanced harmony, open improvisation and modern rhythmic design—balancing virtuosic complexity with groove, emotion and accessibility.
Kemuel Roig is internationally recognized for his collaborations with Arturo Sandoval, Al Di Meola, Brian Lynch, Randy Brecker and Chris Potter. A Frost School of Music graduate and DownBeat Student Music Award recipient, he has been praised by Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo and Shelly Berg for his virtuosity, imagination and singular musical voice.
The trio brings together Samuel Burgos, an award-winning Cuban bassist whose sound bridges jazz language and deep Afro-Cuban roots, and Juan Armando Díaz “JD Drummer”, a dynamic, genre-fusing drummer known for precision, power and explosive creativity. Together, they create a collective sound that is agile, deeply organic and exhilarating in performance.
